Demystifying cooking oils: refined vs filtered vs wood & cold pressed – kachi ghani vs virgin – which is healthier?

Refined oil or Virgin oil? Kachi Ghani or Expeller pressed oil? Most people are confused about what to purchase, and which one is a healthier option for their body. Some advertisements show refined oil to be the best for some reasons, while other shows some other products. Proper information, actually the correct information is not easily found.

The number of procedures that are used to extract oil from the original form i.e. nuts and seeds are huge in number due to which the public gets distracted often.

We believe it is high time we should take charge of this subject and guide people on which oils are good for our health and which are not. It is very important to understand what we cook our food from. What goes into our recipe is how we are going to reflect as well. The lumpsum calories each kind of oil contains are the same, but what makes them different from each other is the ratio of saturated fats they contain.

Now what is fat saturation? Saturated fat is solid at room temperature. As per the form they are at room temperature, fats are diversified into four categories – saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and trans-fatty acids.

Saturated fats, which stay solid at room temperature, make our body produce more LDL cholesterol than is required, which is bad for our body. Hence, eating excess LDL cholesterol foods i.e. saturated fats might bring risks to your health. Oils having saturated fats are butter, coconut oil, palm oil, etc.

Monounsaturated fats, stay liquid at room temperature and solid when refrigerated. These are considered beneficial fats as they raise HDL cholesterol, good for health. Oils rich in this are Olive oil, peanut oil, etc.

Polyunsaturated fats, which even after refrigeration don’t solidify, help in lowering LDL and HDL

are soybean and sunflower oils.

Trans-fatty acids are liquid fats, which look like saturated fats but hold no nutritional value due to the procedure used for it.

Now, since we are aware of the saturated fats and their ratio in a variety of oils, let’s discuss how exactly these oils are extracted from the seeds.

Multiple ways of oil extraction are listed below –

  1. Refined Oil
  2. Cold-pressed Oil or Kachi Ghani
  3. Filtered Oil
  4. Wood pressed Oil
  5. Virgin Oil
  6. Cloth-filtered oil

Let us understand what exactly is used in all these extraction methods that differentiate them from one another and have a huge difference in the benefits provided out of it.

Refined oil is an oil that is purified with the method of settling or using acid to treat oil, whereas cold-pressed oils are extracted naturally by crushing the seeds at room temperature without any chemicals.

Filtered oils are the ones that are filtered through strainers to remove or eliminate all the solid particles of seed and other impurities if any. Since filtered oils are less processed and treated without any heat or chemicals, these are considered a healthy option for consumption.

Virgin oils are oils extracted using cold-pressed methods. It means seeds have been pressed for a single time using a mechanical process at a temperature not exceeding a certain limit which is generally low. This helps in retaining the oil’s beneficial antioxidants and maintains the flavor and aroma of the seeds used.

After having the description or a quick brief on how seeds are extracted into oil in multiple ways, we can easily see refined oil is the worst decision we can ever make for our health.

Refined oils are the oils that are finalized after undergoing bleaching, deodorizing, and many other processes that use excessive use of chemicals, heat, and acids which take a toll on our health. Multiple hazardous chemicals when used to manufacture refined oils, lead to increased blood pressure, cardiovascular disease risk, hypertension, and increased LDL which we discussed above, are required by the body in limited quantity only.

After having the advertisements on television, people find it worth buying refined oils since they come at a budget-friendly price with multiple benefits mentioned. But what is not mentioned on the packaging is the health risks it introduces us to.

My question to you is why are you buying refined oil? Some would say for the price, some would say because we have been using this only for ages. We don’t want to change our taste or so.

The reason why refined oil is much cheaper than any cold-pressed or virgin oil is the quantity and the quality delivered. Since cold-pressed oils are extracted using no high pressure or heat, it has a low quantity of oil extracted from the raw materials as compared to the refined oils.

Refined oil extraction is done in bulk since mass production brings them longer shelf life, which is not the case with cold-pressed oils. Cold-pressed oils come with a shorter shelf life guarantee making them a bit expensive but assure the consumers of natural and rich fragrance, raw goodness, and taste which can not be denied.

When things are neutralized with chemicals, actual quality often gets compromised, which is not done with cold-pressed oils as they are minimally treated and only high-quality seeds are used for oil extraction.

Now let us have a quick look at how Tapti Oils are manufactured and how they claim to provide no danger to health. The methods Tapti Oils use are expeller-pressed and cloth-filtered ways of cold-pressed oil.

Expeller-pressed oil means the oil which has been extracted using the screw press. A screw press is a machine that presses seeds and nuts and uses pressure and friction to extract the oil. There is no added heat involved in the oil extraction as heat has already been created through friction. To run the machine, a certain set of quantity of seeds or nuts has to be used so that the right quality of oil can be extracted.

This expeller pressed oil is 100% safe to be used and consumed since it gives you the choice of chemical-free oil. To start with, you may try your hands on Sesame oil by Tapti extracted in a pure expeller pressed manner to avoid chemical processing.

Multiple benefits are associated with the expeller-pressed oil extraction procedure. Some of them are –

  1. Rich in essential fatty acids
  2. Rich in vitamin A and E which serves softening and conditioning functions to skin and hair
  3. Being a light oil, it penetrates easily and provides moisture and hydration to the skin
  4. Retains high-quality nutrients
  5. It doesn’t leave the moisture content, which creates bacteria

Tapti Oils believes in using another form of extraction as well. Another form is cloth-filtered oil. In cloth-filtered oil, the oil is separated from all the impurities, and substances, so that the virgin oil can be extracted and impurities can be trapped and separated from the oil. This again shows the procedure followed without any heat, chemical, or hazardous substances, which means it is 100% safe to be consumed, healthy, and completely virgin.

It is very important to understand the market about what it is offering to the general public, what the benefits are, any health risks it brings post-consumption, and its nutritious value. If not given much attention, it might be very risky for your health. So, whenever purchasing any product, customers should notice everything on the label to know what are they going to consume and how it is going to affect the consumer overall.

The oils offered by Tapti Oils are 100% virgin and safe, without chemicals and excessive heat, thus serving aromatic, tasteful, and natural goodness products. It not only adds deliciousness to the recipe but also makes sure of the inner body.
